Happy August 13th! While it is not exactly as spooky asFriday the 13th, Thursday the 13th still holds a lot of potential for spooky awakenings and the dawning of profound bodily awareness.
The first exercise can be found in many different traditions and formats, the most readily available being Dr. Alexander Lowen‘s works:
Here Dr. Lowen explains “You are your body.”
Technique 12 is inspired by Dr. Lowen’s works in Bioenergetics. Dr. Lowen called it Grounding. Here in the land of Creative Deconstruction I call it the Earthquake.
Here are the instructions, adapted and enhanced from http://abel.hive.no/trumpet/warmup/grounding.html :
Stand with feet about 10″ apart toes slightly turned in so as to stretch some of the muscles of the buttocks. Shift all your weight to the balls, or front part, of your feet. Bend forward and touch the floor with fingers of both hands as in figure below. The knees should be slightly bent. No weight should be on the hands. Let the head drop as much as possible.
Bend the knees until the heels just barely lift from the ground. When you get the position just right, your legs will tremble. This trembling represents the grounding of energy from your body and mind into the ground.
Breathe through your mouth easily and deeply. Keep breathing.
Hold the position for about one-minute.
The reason I call this exercise the Earthquake is because your legs will tremble if it is done correctly. Experiment with bending the knees a little and shifting the weight to the front of your feet. Explore the trembling with your attention for the duration of the exercise.
Check out some of Dr. Lowen’s own descriptions of Grounding and how it works, by clicking here, here, and here.

Technique 13: The Laserbeam.
Remember all those movies in the 1980s that had laser beams burning through thick metal walls, penetrating to the deepest parts of the Earth, and blowing things up? Well, this technique is kind of like that. If you have seen X-Men, you know about the character Cyclops.
As with many Creative Deconstruction techniques, this one’s power hides underneath it’s apparent simplicity.
How to do the Laserbeam:
It helps to do the Simple Twist of Face before doing the Laserbeam, although it is not totally necessary once you get the practice down and try it a few hundred times.
All you do is focus your attention on the center of your forehead, just above the spot between your eyes. To assist you in the beginning of this endeavor, you can use a spot of Vicks, White Flower Oil, or some other mentholatum-type product on the spot in the center of your forehead, just above the space between your eyes.
Massage the spot with your finger. If you push hard enough, you might feel a bit of tension or gentle pain, similar to the “good pain” of releasing tense muscles with massage. That spot you feel is the spot to concentrate on for Step One of the Laserbeam.
Now, to turn on and focus the Laserbeam, you need Step Two: Pay attention to your breathing. Do nothing to alter it. Simply pay attention to it.
To repeat:
Step 1: Focus on the point in the center of your forehead. Use some menthol/eucalyptus/White Flower Oil/Vicks product to assist your mind in focusing on the point. You may feel a buzzing or tingling sensation when you get Step One going. This can be thought of as Powering Up the Laserbeam.
Step 2: Add an additional focus on your breathing. This may be thought of as Activating the Laserbeam.
Apply the Laserbeam to any situation you want to understand and experience more completely, factually, and authentically. Be warned, however. The Laserbeam has the power to make you fully aware of your true motivations in every situation. Additionally, it has the power to make you aware of the difference between facts and interpretations.
Most importantly, the Laserbeam can be profitably applied while attending lectures, working out and doing physical training, having conversations, speaking to others, and in any situation from which you want to learn rapidly and with great depth.
I have used the Laserbeam in all the college courses I have taken to great effect. I have also used it to learn yoga, martial arts, rock climbing and mountain rescue techniques, snow camping, mountaineering, massage, radical undoing, writing skills, being an attentive listener, partner, and lover, and much much more.
If there is a book you want to learn and incorporate into your physiology and neural networking in your brain, read it three times while using the Laserbeam. Trust that your vast mind is picking up all of the information it needs.
One secret key to the Laserbeam: do not analyze or interpret the information you receive while practicing the Laserbeam. Trust your deeper awareness and your brain itself to organiize and process the information you need. The way to make the Laserbeam work for you is by focusing ALL of your attention on the center of your forehead and your breathing. Experience everything in reality through the lens of the Laserbeam, while trusting your mind to organize and apply the new information as needed.
Knowledge is living information in motion. To acquire knowledge, focus your attention on your breathing and the center of your forehead. You will learn very quickly, and the functioning of your body and brain will be proof of the validity and power of your efforts.
When your focus strays, gently nudge it back to the Laserbeam. If necessary or desirable, picture a laserbeam shooting out of the center of your forehead, charged up with the power of your breath, shooting out and absorbing everything you need to achieve your dream life. The more focus on the Laserbeam means the less focus on your worries, concerns, opinions, judgments, and interpretations of events.
You will find yourself delivered to a clear vision of reality in moments. Don’t worry if you slip up or forget for awhile. Just remember you always have the Laserbeam there and ready to use whenever you want or need it.
Trust yourself!
Enjoy,
